The Professor (Il Camorrista) 1986

Vaguely inspired to the real story of boss of the Camorra's bosses Raffaele Cutolo, this is the story of the criminal career of "Il professore" (the professor). He is in prison, and by there he is able to build, step by step, an empire founded on murders and drugs. He starts a war to destroy all the old Camorra bosses and becoming the new "boss of the bosses". With his sister's help he manages to evade from prison and escape in New York. Here he starts immediately a new relationship with "Cosa Nostra" (Italian American Mafia). He is going to seat on the peak of the most powerful criminal organization, and the Italian authorities are almost impotent.

Husbands (John Cassavetes, 1970)

After the death of their friend, three middle-aged men - Harry (Ben Gazzara), Gus (Cassavetes) and Archie (Peter Falk) - find it difficult to cope. We follow them over the course of two days, where they drink heavily, play basketball together, and have a boisterous singing contest with friends and family. After returning home from his binge, Harry is thrown out by his wife, and shortly after announces he is flying to London. Seemingly with nothing better to do, Gus and Archie decide to join him, where they indulge is more drinking, gambling, and womanising. Gus finds himself with a much younger woman named Mary (Jenny Runacre), who is wild and unpredictable.

Screenwriter John Cassavetes wrote the film's dialogue after doing improvisations with actors Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk. Reportedly, Cassavetes built the film's three main central characterizations around the real-life personalities of the film's three main actors one of whom included himself.
The scene at the bar where Leola Harlow tries to sing "It Was Just a Little Love Affair" and is repeatedly interrupted and harshly criticized by the drunken three main characters, was completely improvised. Harlow reportedly had no idea that they were filming and thought the lead actors were actually criticizing her performance in the scene, causing the very real hurt apparent in her performance.
Nick Cassavetes played uncredited a character, Nick, who had the same first name as his own. This was the first ever film that future actor-writer-director Nick Cassavetes and son of the film's writer-director and co-lead actor John Cassavetes, ever worked on. Like father like son, both in their careers are actor-writer-directors. John´s daughter, Xan,  also works in the film as Xan.

Husbands, by John Cassavetes (1970)

A common friend's sudden death brings three men, married with children, to reconsider their lives and ultimately leave together. But mindless enthusiasm for regained freedom will be short-lived.

Screenwriter John Cassavetes wrote the film's dialogue after doing improvisations with actors Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk. Reportedly, Cassavetes built the film's three main central characterizations around the real-life personalities of the film's three main actors one of whom included himself.

Director John Cassavetes had to cut the film's running time down about 90 minutes to 154 minutes due to contractual requirements with Columbia Pictures. Due to negative reviews and poor box-office, the studio then cut the film down a further 16 minutes to 138 minutes. The around 85 minutes of the original footage from the long cut have never been located.

Apparently, John Cassavetes spent nine months in the cutting room editing the film but is not billed as an editor on the picture.

This is the only film directed by John Cassavetes to feature both Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk, two of his most frequent collaborators.

This was the first film written and directed by John Cassavetes to be shot in color.

In the documentary, "A Constant Forge", Cassavetes said this was a very personal film for him; his older brother died at the age of 30, and he knew very well the effect losing a loved one.

First of three collaborations of actor Ben Gazzara and writer-director John Cassavetes, the others being Noite de Estréia (1977) and A Morte de um Bookmaker Chinês (1976) with Cassavetes not also acting in the latter. The pair also both appeared in two non-Cassavetes written and directed movies, Enquanto Viverem as Ilusões (1969) and "Capone"

This is one of few John Cassavetes-directed movies that does not feature his real-life wife, actress Gena Rowlands.

The production shoot for this film ran for around six months during the first half of the 1969 year.

This was the first ever film that future actor-writer-director Nick Cassavetes and son of the film's writer-director and co-lead actor John Cassavetes, ever worked on. Like father like son, both in their careers are actor-writer-directors.

The film's subtitle was "a comedy about life, death and freedom", which if considered as part of the film's long or complete title, "Husbands - A Comedy About Life, Death & Freedom", as show-business trade paper 'Variety' reported with its review, makes the title at 8 words long the John Cassavetes film with the longest title of all, even longer than Uma Mulher Sob Influência (1974) (5 words) and A Morte de um Bookmaker Chinês (1976) (6 words).

A morte repentina de amigo em comum dos personagens de Cassavetes, Falk e Gazzara, leva os três, casados e com filhos, a reconsiderar suas vidas. Mas esse entusiasmo para uma nova liberdade vai ter vida curta.

Saint Jack (O Tatuado), de Peter Bogdanovich (1979)

Abrir um bordel seu próprio em Singapura prova ser desafiador para um cafetão americano (Ben Gazzara como Jack Flowers), ao passo que gangsters locais tentam tirá-lo do mercado.

Quando pressionado a usar fotos comprometedoras para chantagear um político americano, ele recusa, o que provoca a ira da CIA.

Saint Jack não é dos filmes mais conhecidos de Peter Bogganovich, mas vale pela presença de Ben Gazzara. E... pelas belas camisas que ele usa no filme.

Segundo o diretor em "This is Orson Welles", ele queria que Welles dirigisse o filme. E Welles estava determinado a dirigir. Contudo, depois de alguma pressão do estúdio e de Cybill Shepherd, sua namorada na época, Bogdanovich acabou dirigindo. Isso acabou com a relação dele com Orson, que não foi resolvida até pouco tempo antes da morte de Welles.

As prostitutas dançam ao tema de James Bond 007 contra Goldfinger, estrelado por Sean Connery e o primeiro ator que substituiu Connery foi George Lazenby, que tem um papel neste filme.

A atriz Lisa Lu iria aparecer em um outro filme feito em Singapura quase 40 anos depois em Podres de Ricos (2018).

An Early Frost (AIDS: Aconteceu Comigo), de John Erman (1985)

Anos antes do filme "Philadelphia" com Tom Hanks, este filme foi o primeiro a abordar a AIDS.

Em 1985, a AIDS era um assunto delicado. Foi a NBC que teve a coragem de liberar este filme para a TV.

Foi um dos filmes que ajudou a explicar a homossexualidade e a AIDS para o público, sem ser grosseiro.

Filme se situa no meio da década de 80 mostrando Michael Pierson (Aidan Quinn), um jovem gay, que é diagnosticado com a AIDS no auge da vida. 

Ele é forçado a ser franco sobre a doença e sua homossexualidade pela primeira vez com seus colegas (ele é um advogado de sucesso) e com sua família.

Ele, e as pessoas ao lado dele, devem encarar inevitabilidade da sua morte e a doença que o está matando aos poucos.

Com Ben Gazzara e Gena Rowlands como os pais de Michael. Aidan Quinn como Michael, Sylvia Sidney, D. W. Moffett e Bill Paxton.

Ben Gazzara era grande amigo de John Cassavetes, com quem fez vários filmes. John era casado com Gena Rowlands.

Filme  ganhou 4 Emmys e um Globo de Ouro de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante para Sylvia Sidney.

A Herdeira (Bloodline), de Terence Young (1979)

Sam Roffe, presidente de uma multinacional farmacêutica morre ao cair de uma montanha, fazendo alpinismo. A princípio, é apontado ser um acidente, mas o investigador da polícia, Max Hornung descobre que Roffe foi assassinado. A corda que o sustentava na montanha foi cortada por um tiro.

A filha de Sam, Elizabeth assume o controle da empresa e ela começa a ser o próximo alvo, porque ela não quer, assim como Sam Roffe não desejava, tornar a empresa pública, com ações no mercado. 

A primeira suspeita da morte recai nos primos de Roffe, todos querendo que a empresa abra o capital e possam vender ações e ficarem ricos. Assim como seu pai, Elizabeth rejeita a ideia dos primos e mantém a empresa com capital fechado.

Enquanto isso, Hornung pesquisa a vida pregressa dos primos e mais tentativas de matar Elizabeth acontecem. O inspetor de polícia acaba conseguindo conectar essas tentativas a uma série de assassinatos de prostitutas, que são gravadas em filmes. Os chamados “snuff films”, que são filmes onde mostram mortes sendo realizadas. As suspeitas também recaem em Rhys Williams, que é o CEO da empresa, mas as dúvidas se esclarecem apenas ao final do filme.

O papel de Elizabeth Roffe foi recusado por Candice Bergen, Jacqueline Bisset e Diane Keaton, antes de Audrey Hepburn aceitar e a idade da personagem foi alterada de 23 para 35. Audrey já estava com 50 anos quando o filme estreou. Ela estava em semi-aposentadoria quando concordou em fazer o filme. O salário dela foi de $1.000.000 de dólares mais uma porcentagem dos lucros.

Este filme foi feito após o término de seu segundo casamento com o playboy italiano Andrea Dotti e ela quis fazer o filme para esquecer, não percebendo que no meio das filmagens, haveria um subenredo interpolado de um ‘snuff film’. Ela quis desistir, mas honrou o seu contrato, para desespero de seus fãs e admiradores.

O diretor Terence Young ficou conhecido por dirigir três dos primeiros filmes de James Bond nos anos 60. Por coincidência, Gert Frobe, que faz o papel do investigador, também fez um papel em “007 contra Goldfinger”, embora este filme tenha sido dirigido por Guy Hamilton.

Bloodline ou A Herdeira, baseado em livro do famoso escritor Sidney Sheldon, sempre teve um certo apelo, não sei pela bela trilha de Morricone ou pela presença de grandes astros como Audrey Hepburn, Ben Gazzara, James Mason, Romy Schneider, Maurice Ronet, Irene Papas e Omar Sharif. Além de uma ponta de Wolfgang Preiss, que faz Julius Prager. Wolfgang ficou muito conhecido por fazer papeis de general nazista. O elenco é muito desperdiçado em um roteiro mal elaborado, que se configura morno em grande parte do filme (haja vista a nota ruim de 4.6 que tem no IMDb).  E que deve ter dado um belo prejuízo com as locações em várias cidades. Mas ainda vale assistir.
