Angels of Sin (Les Anges du Péché) - Robert Bresson - 1943

Anne-Marie, a well–off young woman, decides to become a nun, joining a convent that rehabilitates female prisoners. Through their program, she meets a woman named Thérèse who refuses any help because she says she was innocent of the crime for which she was convicted. After being released from prison, Thérèse murders the man she feels is responsible for her imprisonment and comes to seek sanctuary from the law in the convent. Anne-Marie clashes with her sisters and elders over her zealousness to reform Thérèse, who manipulates and antagonizes her.

H2S (1969)

"H2S" was never released outside Italy. Rarely seen since its original Cinema release in 1968 this surreal futuristic comedy drama is directed by Roberto Faenza whose inspirations from his art college days are clearly displayed here. Student revolts in a futuristic scientific university see an unusual role for the American actor Lionel Stander,who had previously been cast as the barman in Sergio Leone's "Cera una volta il West"(1968) The story is a puzzling one- it begins in London,England where students are controlled by a dictatorship Government where sex is outlawed.The film was supposed to have been banned in Italy and destroyed,but do they really do that to films these days? Nonetheless,the set designs are truly stunning,especially the second half of the film where the runaway lovers end up living in the Italian mountains in a colourful 'funked-up' igloo! But the film is so slow and bemusing blending political statements with sci-fi which was to emerge as a popular genre in the US. The musical score by Ennio Morricone is superb.

The Man with the Lens - Der Mann mit dem Objektiv - (1961)

Using a crystal for mind reading he uncovers some improprieties and moral weaknesses in the “Beautiful future” professed by VEB (“Volkseigener Betrieb” – “State Owned Holdings”).

From legendary director Felipe Cazals, a historical drama of the last days of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Despite defeating the Texans of the Alamo, he lost the war of Texas Independence and gave away half of Mexico (including Texas, New Mexico, and Oregon). Exiled from his homeland, he is allowed to return only a few years before dying in 1976. At the end of his life, he still clings to illusions of regaining his former glory and popularity.
