Any Number Can Win - Mélodie en sous-sol - (Henri Verneuil, 1963)

Charles, a sixtyish career criminal fresh out of jail, rejects his wife’s plan for a quiet life of bourgeois respectability. He enlists a former cellmate, Francis, to assist him in pulling off one final score, a carefully planned assault on the vault of a Cannes casino. Bad luck and Francis’s lack of professionalism set the caper maddeningly askew, and the stolen cash resurfaces in an unexpected manner.

Taboo - Gohatto - (Nagisa Oshima, 1999)

The young and handsome Kano Sozaburo is admitted to the Shinsengumi, an elite samurai group that seeks to defend the Tokugawa shogunate against reformist forces. Kano is a skilled swordsman, but his physical beauty leads the members of the strictly male group to compete for his affections, generating tensions that threaten to become lethal. In Gohatto, Nagisa Oshima explores the ambiguous forms of masculinity that the samurai code concealed, with a terrific cast including Ryuhei Matsuda, Takeshi Kitano and Tadanobu Asano subtly capturing the dangers of repressed homoerotic desire.

The Love Goddesses (1965) - Documentary


This insightful documentary features some of the major and most beautiful actresses to grace the silver screen. It shows how the movie industry changed its depiction of sex and actresses’ portrayal of sex from the silent-movie era to the present. Classic scenes are shown from the silent movie “True Heart Susie,” starring Lillian Gish, to “Love Me Tonight” (1932), blending sex and sophistication, starring Jeanette MacDonald (pre-Nelson Eddy) and to Elizabeth Taylor in “A Place in the Sun” (1951), plus many, many more.
