A Polish film

Andrzej Zulawski began filming after the success of The Most Important Thing: Love (1975), completing around three-quarters of film before the Polish ministry of culture halted production in 1978. After the democratization of Poland in 1986 Zulawski completed the film. Because production was interrupted from 1978 until 1986, the final film was released in an "amputated" form, with voice-over narration covering missing scenes.

The film is based on a novel of the same name written around 1900 by Andrej Zulawski's granduncle Jerzy Zulawski. The novel is part of a trilogy known as The Lunar Trilogy.

The Bohemian Life (La vie de bohème) - 1992

Three penniless artists become friends in modern-day Paris: Rodolfo, an Albanian painter with no visa, Marcel, a playwright and magazine editor with no publisher, and Schaunard, a post-modernist composer of execrable noise

Director

Aki Kaurismäki

Writers

Henri Murger (based on the novel by: "Scènes de la vie de bohème"), Aki Kaurismäki

Stars

Matti Pellonpää, Evelyne Didi, André Wilms, Jean-Pierre Lèaud

Cameos: Louis Malle and Samuel Fuller.

Neither Matti Pellonpää or Kari Väänänen could speak any French in real life. The script contained instructions how to pronounce the lines. The phonetically written lines were regularly taped on the forehead of the actor opposite of Matti Pellonpää where he could read them.

The filming on the Paris Central Train Station would have cost so much that avoiding to spend too much money, director Aki Kaurismäki decided to create an illusion of the train station: he reflected a shadow of a train wagon against garage doors.

Aki Kaurismäki spend years trying to write an adaptation of Henri Murger's novel with Helsinki in mind as a shooting-location. But finally he came to a conclusion that Paris is the only place where the film could be made.

There is a continual audio-visual mismatch in the movie.
