La Salamandre - Alain Tanner - 1971

Pierre é um jornalista, trabalhando em série de artigos sobre a relação da economia do Brasil com os da Suiça. Seu amigo, Paul, é um novelista que trabalha como pintor para pagar as contas. Quando Pierre, com aperto financeiro, busca uma oportunidade de um trabalho na televisão da Suiça, para escrever um roteiro sobre um acidente com tiro vários anos atrás, ele pede a ajuda de Paul para completar tudo em um prazo exigido de um mês. O acidente com tiros tem alguma intriga: um homem que leva um tiro, quando limpava seu rifle do exército. Ele diz que sua sobrinha delinquente, Rosemonde, atirou nele, enquanto ela diz que ele atirou em si próprio acidentalmente. A verdade nunca é determinada e Rosemonde não é indiciada. Pierre investiga o caso como um jornalista, revendo a cena do tiro e entrevistando o tio, os ex-empregadores da sobrinha e amigos, e até mesmo Rosemonde. Paul recria o acidente, usando sua imaginação para construir os detalhes do caso e os participantes, enquanto continua em casa com sua esposa poeta e a filha jovem. Eles planejam trabalhar independentemente e juntar o material para criar o roteiro final. Paul usa a intuição para os detalhes e as pessoas sem saber os fatos, enquanto Pierre tenta estabelecer os fatos. Ele cria uma relação com Rosemonde, que entra na sua vida e na sua cama.

Pierre is a journalist working on a series of articles relating Brazilian economics to those in Switzerland. His friend, Paul, is a novelist who works as a house painter to make ends meet. When the financially strapped Pierre pursues a paying assignment from Swiss television to write a script about a shooting incident several years back, he enlists Paul's help to complete everything in the needed one-month time frame. The incident offers some intrigue: a man is shot while cleaning his army rifle. He says his delinquent niece, Rosemonde, shot him, while she claims he accidentally shot himself. The truth is never determined and Rosemonde is not charged. Pierre pursues the assignment like a journalist, reviewing the shooting scene and interviewing the uncle, the niece's former employers and friends, and eventually Rosemonde herself. Paul recreates the incident, applying his imagination alone to construct the details of the plot and the players while continuing at home with his poet wife and young daughter. They plan to work independently and pool their material to create the final script. Uncannily, Paul intuits a lot of the details of events and persons correctly without knowing the facts, while we observe Pierre running the facts down. He develops a relationship with Rosemonde, who enters his life and his bed.

Black Jack, by Ken Loach (1979)

A rediscovered classic from director Ken Loach (Kes,'The Wind That Shakes the Barley,' 'Kes') and one of the inspirations for Wes Anderson's 'Moonrise Kingdom,' 'Black Jack' is a dark, complex adventure film set in the 18th century and based on Leon Garfield's novel for children. When French thief "Black Jack" kidnaps young Tolly, a journey begins that includes traveling fairs, murder, and the rescue of a young girl from a private insane asylum. While shot primarily in 16mm and on a modest budget on location in Yorkshire, Chris Menges' photography, the enchanting performances by its young cast, and Loach's gentle, observational style all shine through.

Fall of Eagles , BBC Miniseries, Complete 13 Episodes (1974)

The Fall of Eagles refers to the end of three great royal houses: The Habsburgs of Austria, The Hohenzollerns of Germany and The Romanovs of Russia.

The series takes place from 1853 to 1918. In almost 70 years we follow the course of history from the marriage of the young Franz Josef  with the daughter of Queen Victoria, Vicky, through the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II (son of Vicky).

Each of the empires became republics by the end of the World War I  (also known as The Great War), a war, which the series implies, could so easily have been avoided. Also there were family links with England that fell apart after the war.

The story is narrated by Michael Hordern, putting each story in context, although using a minimum of outdoor filming to avoid extra costs.

The miniseries was produced by BBC in thirteen episodes with subtitles only in English. 

The music opening theme used is by Gustav Mahler. And they also used a funeral march by Mozart (Kleiner Trauermarsch).

A minissérie da BBC, Fall of Eagles, de 1974, conta a história da queda de três grandes casas reais: Os Habsburgos da Áustria, Os Hohenzollerns da Alemanha e Os Romanovs da Rússia.

A série cobre o período de 1853 a 1918. São quase 70 anos, desde o casamento de Vicky (filha da Rainha Vitória) com Franz Josef até a abdicação de William II ou Guilherme II.

Todos os três impérios se tornam repúblicas ao final da 1ª Guerra Mundial (também conhecida como a Grande Guerra), uma guerra, conforme a série coloca, poderia ter sido facilmente evitada. Também  houve ligações com a Inglaterra que acabam  depois da guerra.

A história é narrada por Michael Hordern, colocando cada parte em contexto e usando um mínimo de filmagens externas para evitar custos extras.

A minissérie foi produzida pela BBC em treze episódios com legendas apenas em Inglês.

Night People (A Sombra da Noite), de Nunnally Johnson (1954)

Filme de Nunnally Johnson (que também já escreveu ótimos roteiros) mostra a estória de um soldado americano, John Leatherby (Ted Avery), estacionado na Alemanha Oriental do pós guerra. Ele é sequestrado e levado para a parte oriental da Alemanha. Os americanos do Departamento de Estado são notificados e a notícia chega aos familiares do jovem soldado, que tem um pai milionário que começa a brigar em Washington para ter seu filho de volta. Na Alemanha, o problema cai no colo do Coronel Steve Van Dyke (Gregory Peck) que é designado para resolver o caso. Ele é um soldado experiente, mas é atrapalhado pelo pai do soldado, (Broderick Crawford), que tenta forçar a barra com ajuda do Sargento Eddie McColloch (Buddy Ebsen). Lidar com as outras potências que controlam a seção oriental da Alemanha prova ser uma tarefa difícil, com russos, ex-nazistas, agentes duplos e vítimas políticas.

The story as written by Jed Harris and directed by Nunnally Johnson begins slowly and tells of a single United States soldier, Cpl. John Leatherby (Ted Avery) stationed in West Germany shortly after W.W. II. After his kidnapping, the Americans are notified. A noise which is heard in the state department and there after reaches the the parents of the young soldier, who happens to have some very powerful friends, one which takes his millionaire status and starts banging on Washington doors to get his son back. Back in Germany, the problem lands on the stoop of one, Col. Steve Van Dyke (Gregory Peck) who is ordered to resolve the issue. He is an experienced soldier, but is hindered by the boy's Father (Broderick Crawford) who tries to throw his weight around and ably assisted by Sgt. Eddie McColloch (Buddy Ebsen). Dealing with the other major powers controlling the Eastern section of the Berlin Wall, proves a difficult task, what with the rise of the Russians, Ex-Nazis, double agents and political victims all vining for his attention.

The Shout (O Estranho Poder de Matar), de Jerzy Skolimosk (1978)

Um paciente de instituição mental, Crossley (Alan Bates) conta a estória de si próprio, que pode ser verdade ou não, a um jovem e confuso Tim Curry, durante uma partida de cricket na instituição. Ele conta como ele se intrometeu na casa de um compositor de música experimental, Anthony (John Hurt), que grava todos os tipos de sons e barulhos interessantes e depois os manipula em seu estúdio de equipamentos eletrônicos e de sua esposa Rachel (Susannah York) Nos flashbacks e na volta ao presente, ele conta a eles sobre sua singular habilidade que ele aprendeu de um curandeiro aborígene, nos tempos em que morava no interior da Austrália. Parece que ele consegue dar um grito (daí o título do filme) que poderá matar qualquer um dentro de certa distância. Ele demonstra "O Grito" para Anthony e, sem saber, mata um fazendeiro local. The Europeans (Os Europeus), de James Ivory (1979)

Filme baseado em romance do escritor  norte americano Henry James, de 1878.

Estamos nos meados do século 19. Os irmãos Felix Young e Eugenia Munster  nasceram e foram educados na Europa e tem um certo estilo de vida boêmio, por causa de suas viagens pela Europa. Felix, que tem pouco dinheiro, tem interesse na pintura e nas artes. Eugenia é uma baronesa por casamento. Eles decidem viajar para a Nova Inglaterra, nos EUA, para encontrar o tio e os três primos, os Wentworths, pela primeira vez, os Wentworths que vivem perto de Boston. Os Wentworths são muito puritanos, o tio, em particular que serve de seu vizinho, Sr. Brand, para fornecer uma conduta moral aos seus três filhos, especialmente a tímida Gertrude,  com quem o Sr. Brand quer se casar. Os Wentworths ficam um tanto desconfiados quanto a razão da visita dos parentes, mas o tio os coloca em um casa vizinha na propriedade dele. Enquanto Felix desfruta da companhia de seus primos - especialmente Gertrude - Eugenia fica mais à distância e consciente da verdadeira razão da viagem deles para os EUA. It's the mid-nineteenth century. Adult siblings Felix Young and Eugenia Munster were born and raised in Europe and have a somewhat bohemian lifestyle reflective of their travels throughout Europe. Felix, who has little money, is interested in painting and the arts. Eugenia is a baroness by marriage. They decide to travel to New England to meet their maternal uncle and their three cousins, the Wentworths, for the first time, the Wentworths who live just outside of Boston. The Wentworths are highly puritanical, the uncle in particular who looks to a neighbor, Mr. Brand, to provide a moral compass to his three children, especially the shy Gertrude, who Mr. Brand wants to marry. The Wentworths are somewhat suspicious as to the reason for their relatives' visit, but nonetheless the uncle puts them up in a neighboring house on their property. While Felix enjoys the company of his cousins - especially Gertrude - Eugenia is a bit more standoffish and cognizant of the real reason for their trip to the United States. For Eugenia, another of their uncle's cousins, a Mr. Robert Acton, may just fit the bill related to her goal, which concerns her current marriage and financial security.

Little Murders (Pequenos Assassinatos), de Alan Arkin (1971)

Patsy Newquist (Marcia Rodd) is an interior decorator in New York City who rescues a man (Elliott Gould as Alfred Chamberlain) from a prolonged beating that she hears going on outside of her apartment. When she does intervene the group of hooligans turns on her and Alfred does nothing but walk away. After she escapes them, she confronts Alfred about this, who does not apologize. In fact he says nothing. Patsy is instantly smitten by this self acclaimed "apathist", and sets out to make him see life is good and get him trying again - at anything. He is her project, yet she sees this as love.

Alan Arkin plays a cop driven mad by all of the homicides in which the victims come from every walk, age, and ethnicity and none of them apparently knew their assailants.

Donald Sutherland has a small but memorable role as pastor of the First Existential Church who is able to grant Alfred and Patsy's request that the name of the deity not be mentioned in their wedding ceremony.

Patsy Newquist (Marcia Rodd) é uma decoradora de interiores em Nova York e que salva um homem (Elliot Gould como Alfred Chamberlain) de uma surra, que ela acaba escutando do lado de fora do seu apartamento. Quando ela vai intervir, o grupo vai em cima dela e Alfred não faz nada para ajudar e vai embora. O diretor Alan Arkin faz um policial endoidecido por todos os homicídios nos quais as vítimas são de todos os lugares, idade, etnias e nenhum deles aparentemente sabe quem os está atacando.

Donald Sutherland tem um papel pequeno como um reverendo de uma igreja.

Noroît (Noroeste), de Jacques Rivette (1976)

Noroit ou Noroeste é um dos trabalhos mais físicos do diretor Jacques Rivette, e guarda uma certa comparação com seu filme de dois anos antes, “Céline e Julie Vão de Barco” (filme que também quero postar aqui no blog e no meu canal Momentex Videos no YouTube) no fato de que o foco também é em duas mulheres e que há situações irrealistas e incursões de pura fantasia.

Os papeis principais são de Geraldine Chaplin e Bernadette Lafont, que fazem Morag e Giulia respectivamente. Morag trabalha como guarda-costas da rainha pirata (Giulia), enquanto planeja matá-la por vingança.

O filme traz citações da obra de Thomas Middleton, The Revenger´s Tragedy, do século 17, que fornece um ar teatral clássico.

In Jacques Rivette's original conception, Noroit would have been one of a four-film series of linked Scenes de la vie parallele. In the event, only two of the films were made (Duelle was the other) and the film is most likely to be viewed now in the shadow of Rivette's towering achievement of a few years earlier, Celine and Julie Go Boating. Noroit shares many characteristics of that film - a focus on two women, a situation that clearly can't be taken "realistically," unexplained incursions of pure fantasy, to name just a few. But it's also explicitly an "adventure film," one of Rivette's most physical works, with much gunplay and fighting (although of an abstract, stylized variety), scenes of heavy lifting, and Bernadette Lafont strutting around in some outrageous costumes, and unlike Celine and Julie, the two central women here are adversaries, with Morag (Geraldine Chaplin) working as a bodyguard for pirate queen Giulia (Lafont) while plotting to kill her for revenge. If the film often feels like heavier going than Celine and Julie, that might be seen in part as an appropriate reflection of the subject matter and the stakes (it also reflects the explicit citations of a 17th century text, The Revengers' Tragedy, giving the film a foothold in classically disciplined theatricality). But it does mean that it becomes most satisfying in its final stretch, as it takes on the sense of trying to escape its bonds - dialogue yields to dance, the image flashes to black and white or to red as if the cinematic apparatus itself were becoming unstable, and one character demonstrates both previously unsuspected magical powers and the capacity to replicate herself.

The Message (Maomé, O Mensageiro de Alá), de Moustapha Akkad (1976)

The film starts with Muhammed receiving the Koran from the angel Gabriel and ends at his death.

In accordance with Muslim beliefs, Mohammed could not be depicted on screen nor could his voice be heard. This rule extended to his wives, his daughters and his sons-in-law. This left Mohammed's uncle as the central character (played by Anthony Quinn). In the completed film, actors speak directly to the camera and then nod to unheard dialogue.

The plot focuses on the historical events rather than the Koran itself, which contains almost no history from its own period, and is therefore different from a lot of Biblical epics which present the historical events in the Bible. It's accurate in that it tries to present the birth of Islam as most people today probably learn it. The movie presents a snapshot of the times and the attitudes and lifestyles under which Islam developed.

The University of Al-Azhar in Cairo and the High Islamic Congress of the Shiat in Lebanon were involved in approving the accuracy of the film.

Production stopped when the financeers withdrew their support, leaving cast and crew stranded for two weeks in Morocco (in a hotel with broken air conditioning; they slept under wet towels). Financing was eventually supplied by none other than Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi.

O filme começa com Maomé recebendo o Alcorão do anjo Gabriel e termina na sua morte. 

De acordo com as crenças mulçumanas, Maomé não poderia ser mostrado na tela, nem sua voz poderia ser ouvida. Essa regra também valia para suas esposas, suas filhas e cunhados. Dessa forma, o papel central fica a cargo do seu tio (feito por Anthony Quinn). No filmes, os atores falam diretamente para a câmera e depois fazem o gesto que ouviram Maomé falar.

O enredo foca em eventos históricos do que no próprio Alcorão, que contém quase nenhuma história do seu período, diferentemente dos acontecimentos na Bíblia Cristã. É preciso na forma que tenta apresentar o nascimento do Islã como as pessoas hoje provavelmente aprendem. O filme mostra a época, as atitudes e estilos de vida sobre o qual o Islã se desenvolveu.

A Universidade de Al-Azhar no Cairo e o Congresso Islâmico Supremo do Shiat no Líbano participaram da aprovação dos detalhes do script do filme.

A produção do filme foi interrompida depois que os financiadores retiraram o apoio à produção, deixando o elenco e equipe parados por duas semanas em Marrrocos ( em um hotel com o ar condicionado quebrado e eles dormindo debaixo de toalhas molhadas). O financiamento foi depois fornecido por ninguém mais do que o líder líbio Muammar al-Kadhafi.

Ghosts of Mississippi (Fantasmas do Passado), de Rob Reiner (1996)

Ghosts of Mississippi is a real-life drama covering the final trial of Byron De La Beckwith, the assassin of heroic civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The movie begins with the murder on June 12, 1963 and the events surrounding the two initial trials which both ended in hung juries. The movie then covers district attorney Bobby De Laughter's transformation and alliance with Myrlie Evers, Medgar Evers' widow, as he becomes more involved with bringing Beckwith to trial for the third time 30 years later. Byron De La Beckwith was convicted on February 5, 1994, after having remained a free man for much of the 30 years after the murder, giving justice for Medgar Evers' family.

Cast:  Alec Baldwin, James Woods and Whoopi Goldberg. Virginia Madsen, Craig Nelson, William H. Macy, Brock Peters, Wayne Rodgers and Diane Ladd.

Academy Awards, 1997 Nominations to James Woods as Best Supporting Actor and Best Makeup.

The daughter of civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Yolanda King, played Medgar Evers' daughter Reena Evers in this film.

Medgar Evers' two sons Darrell Evers and James Van Evers played themselves in this film. His widow Myrlie Evers was also one of this film's consultants.

Delmar Dennis (a key witness against the murderer, Byron de la Beckwith) and his family can be seen as extras in the parade scene. At this film's ending, a title card indicated that Bobby DeLaughter had run for a position as a judge and been defeated. That was true at the time. Subsequently, he was appointed to a judgeship and later elected overwhelmingly to that position.

Unlike her brothers, Reena Evers opted not to play herself. However, she can be seen numerous times as a juror in the 1994 trial.

Fantasmas do Passado é um drama baseado em fatos reais, cobrindo o julgamento final de Byron De La Beckwith, o assassino do líder dos direitos humanos Medgar Evers. O filme começa com o assassinato em 12 de Junho de 1963 e a seguir os eventos cercando os dois julgamentos iniciais nos quais em ambos terminaram sem o  júri chegar a um veredicto. Depois, o filme mostra o promotor de justiça Bobby De Laughter em aliança com a viúva de Medgar, Myrlie Evers, quando ele começa a ficar mais envolvido em levar Beckwith para julgamento pela terceira vez, depois de 30 anos passados. Byron De La Beckwith foi condenado em 1994, depois de ser um homem livre pela maioria dos 30 anos após o assassinato, fazendo justiça para a família de Megdar Evers.

Com Alec Baldwin, James Woods e Whoopi Goldberg, Virginia Madsen, Craig Nelson, William H. Macy, Brock Peters, Wayne Rogers e Diane Ladd.

Filme recebeu duas indicações ao Oscar. Melhor Ator Coadjuvante para James Woods e Melhor Maquiagem.

A filha de Martin Luther King, Yolanda King, fez o papel da filha de Medgar Evers, Reena Evers no filme. Diferente dos irmãos, Reena não quis desempenhar ela mesma. Mas ela pode ser vista numerosas vezes como jurada no julgamento de 1994.

Os irmãos dela atuaram como eles mesmos e a viúva ajudou no roteiro do filme.

O pai de Van, Stan, gosta de vídeos, sempre filmando cenas diárias da vida familiar. Mas não cuida da avó de Van, Armen. Embora ele tenha condições de mantê-la em casa, ela fica passando o dia assistindo TV em um lar de idosos. Van a visita frequentemente. Ele conhece Aline, cuja mãe está na cama vizinha. Van quer tirar sua avó do lar de idosos. Aline quer ajudar. Na verdade, Van, cuja mãe foi embora anos atrás, está procurando ter uma vida real em família.
