The Shout (O Estranho Poder de Matar), de Jerzy Skolimosk (1978)

Um paciente de instituição mental, Crossley (Alan Bates) conta a estória de si próprio, que pode ser verdade ou não, a um jovem e confuso Tim Curry, durante uma partida de cricket na instituição. Ele conta como ele se intrometeu na casa de um compositor de música experimental, Anthony (John Hurt), que grava todos os tipos de sons e barulhos interessantes e depois os manipula em seu estúdio de equipamentos eletrônicos e de sua esposa Rachel (Susannah York) Nos flashbacks e na volta ao presente, ele conta a eles sobre sua singular habilidade que ele aprendeu de um curandeiro aborígene, nos tempos em que morava no interior da Austrália. Parece que ele consegue dar um grito (daí o título do filme) que poderá matar qualquer um dentro de certa distância. Ele demonstra "O Grito" para Anthony e, sem saber, mata um fazendeiro local. A presença de Crossley na casa de Anthony vai se tornando indesejada, mas ele continua a forçar sua estada com intimidações. Ele usa suas habilidades místicas e misteriosas para transformar Rachel em se tornar fanática por ele e zomba de Anthony com sua conquista e poderes. He tells of how he self-imposed his way into the home of an experimental musique concrète composer, Anthony (John Hurt), who records all sorts of fascinating sounds and noises and then manipulates them with his mini-studio of electronic equipment, and his wife Rachel (Susannah York). Inside the flashback/flash forward/flash sideways, he tells them of a unique ability he has perfected, which he learned from an aboriginal medicine man while living in the Australian outback. It seems he can perform a shout that will kill anyone within a surrounding radius. He demonstrates "The Shout" to Anthony and unknowingly kills a local farmer. His presence in Anthony's home quickly becomes awkward and unwanted but he continues to force his stay with intimidation. He uses his mysterious mystical abilities to entrance Rachel into becoming almost rabid for him, and taunts Anthony with his conquest and powers. Anthony, humiliated and overpowered in his own home and life, searches desperately for a way to defeat Crossley; searches for the source of his "soul". Film based on story by writer Robert Graves.
