In accordance with Muslim beliefs, Mohammed could not be depicted on screen nor could his voice be heard. This rule extended to his wives, his daughters and his sons-in-law. This left Mohammed's uncle as the central character (played by Anthony Quinn). In the completed film, actors speak directly to the camera and then nod to unheard dialogue.
The plot focuses on the historical events rather than the Koran itself, which contains almost no history from its own period, and is therefore different from a lot of Biblical epics which present the historical events in the Bible. It's accurate in that it tries to present the birth of Islam as most people today probably learn it. The movie presents a snapshot of the times and the attitudes and lifestyles under which Islam developed.
The University of Al-Azhar in Cairo and the High Islamic Congress of the Shiat in Lebanon were involved in approving the accuracy of the film.
Production stopped when the financeers withdrew their support, leaving cast and crew stranded for two weeks in Morocco (in a hotel with broken air conditioning; they slept under wet towels). Financing was eventually supplied by none other than Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi.

O filme começa com Maomé recebendo o Alcorão do anjo Gabriel e termina na sua morte.
De acordo com as crenças mulçumanas, Maomé não poderia ser mostrado na tela, nem sua voz poderia ser ouvida. Essa regra também valia para suas esposas, suas filhas e cunhados. Dessa forma, o papel central fica a cargo do seu tio (feito por Anthony Quinn). No filmes, os atores falam diretamente para a câmera e depois fazem o gesto que ouviram Maomé falar.
O enredo foca em eventos históricos do que no próprio Alcorão, que contém quase nenhuma história do seu período, diferentemente dos acontecimentos na Bíblia Cristã. É preciso na forma que tenta apresentar o nascimento do Islã como as pessoas hoje provavelmente aprendem. O filme mostra a época, as atitudes e estilos de vida sobre o qual o Islã se desenvolveu.
A Universidade de Al-Azhar no Cairo e o Congresso Islâmico Supremo do Shiat no Líbano participaram da aprovação dos detalhes do script do filme.
A produção do filme foi interrompida depois que os financiadores retiraram o apoio à produção, deixando o elenco e equipe parados por duas semanas em Marrrocos ( em um hotel com o ar condicionado quebrado e eles dormindo debaixo de toalhas molhadas). O financiamento foi depois fornecido por ninguém mais do que o líder líbio Muammar al-Kadhafi.
