Wedding in Galilee (1987)

A Palestinian seeks Israeli permission to waive curfew to give his son a fine wedding. The military governor's condition is that he and his officers attend. The groom berates his father for agreeing. Women ritually prepare the bride; men prepare the groom. Guests gather. The Arab youths plot violence. One Israeli officer swoons in the heat and Arab women take her into the cool house. A thoroughbred gets loose and runs to a mined field; soldiers and Arabs must cooperate to rescue it. As darkness falls, tensions between army and villagers rise, and the groom's wedding-night anger and impotence threaten family dignity and honor.

Um palestino procura permissão da ocupação israelense para baixar o toque de recolher para dar ao seu filho um bom casamento. A condição dada pelo governador militar é que ele e seus oficiais sejam convidados. O noivo reclama com seu pai por concordar. As mulheres preparam ritualmente a noiva e os homens o noivo. Convidados se reúnem e  jovens árabes planejam violência. Uma oficial israelense desmaia por causa do calor e as mulheres árabes a levam para um lugar fresco da casa. Um cavalo de raça se solta e segue para um campo minado; soldados e árabes precisam cooperar entre si para salvá-lo. Quando começa a escuridão, as tensões aumentam entre o exército e o pessoal do vilarejo e a ira do noivo e a impotência na noite de núpcias ameaçam a dignidade e honra da família.

Stalin, de Ivan Passer (1992)

Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (Robert Duvall) supera sua rejeição de ser fisicamente incapaz para participar do exercido do Czar, durante a 1ª Guerra Mundial, para se um dos chefes do Império Soviético nos anos 1950s. Após o sucesso da Revolução Bolchevique em 1917, ele disputa o poder com seu arqui-rival Leon Trotsky (Daniel Massey) sob o líder máximo Vladimir Lenin (Maximilian Schell). Depois que Lenin sofre um derrame, os métodos cruéis e impiedosos do georgiano Stalin logo fazem eliminar todos os rivais , incluindo muitos ex-camaradas, tudo para manter o poder.

Esse filme feito pela HBO para a TV, dirigido por Ivan Passer, é baseado no livro de memórias da filha de Stalin, Svetlana, que foi best-seller nos anos 60, então pode se esperar uma visão benévola do ditador e, na verdade, Svetlana parece ser a única por quem Stalin demonstra afeto. Ele ama sua esposa, Nadya (Julia Ormond), mas a maltratava ele ao ponto de suicídio. Ele odiava seu filho ilegítimo, mas é um ponto de vista de Svetlana de seu pai com defeitos.

Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (Robert Duvall) rises from his rejection as being physically unfit in the Czar's Army during World War I to undisputed head of the huge Soviet empire of the 1950s. After the success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, he vies with archrival Leon Trotsky (Daniel Massey) for power under the acknowledged leader, Vladimir Lenin (Maximilian Schell). After Lenin's stroke, the merciless Georgian's ruthless methods soon eliminates all rivals and his cruel paranoia and overt sadism help him maintain power by eliminating every possible rival, including many former comrades.

It's based on the memoirs of Stalin's daughter, Svetlana, a big seller in the 1960s, so one would expect a kind of benign view of the Soviet dictator and, indeed, Svetlana appears to be the only person towards whom he shows genuine affection. He loved his wife, Julia Ormond, of course but mistreated her to the point of suicide. He hated his illegitimate son and kept his own son in disregard. So it's a daughter's view of her admittedly flawed father, but let's keep some things in the family too.

Tempos Difíceis (Hard Times), de João Botelho, 1988

Filme de Portugal com áudio em Português e legendas em Inglês. Baseado no livro "Hard Times" do Charles Dickens, de 1854.

O diretor e roteirista João Botelho transporta o romance do mestre Dickens para uma cidade industrial portuguesa dos anos 1980s.

Com: Henrique Viana, Julia Britton, Ruy Furtado e Eunice Munoz.

O diretor João Botelho trocou os nomes dos personagens do livro. O sobrenome do personagem Gradgrind foi traduzido como Cremalheira.

Gradgrind é uma palavra em Inglês, usada para se referir a alguém que é duro e só se preocupa com fatos e números.

Para quem não conhece ainda esse livro de Dickens, é o seu 10º romance, publicado em 1854. O livro  é uma apreciação da sociedade inglesa e tem como objetivo dar destaque às pressões econômicas e sociais daquele tempo, uma característica comum nos livros do escritor.

Two Flags West (Entre Dois Juramenntos), de Robert Wise (1950)

Durante a Guerra Civil, em 1863, prisioneiros confederados concordam se juntar às forças do exército da União, para ajudarem na luta contra os índios. Em troca, os prisioneiros terão a liberdade garantida pelo presidente Lincoln. Os soldados confederados são da cavalaria da Geórgia, sob o comando do Coronel Clay Tucker (Joseph Cotten), e aceitam ajudar sob a condição única de que não lutarem contra o exército Confederado. Eles são enviados, junto com os soldados da União, para Forte Thorn, em área isolada no Novo México. O forte é comandado pelo Major Henry Kenniston (Jeff Chandler), que manca por causa de ferida de guerra e odeia os confederados. As velhas animosidades entre os soldados confederados e da União rapidamente ressurgem durante essa frágil aliança contra os índios.

Com Joseph Cotten, Jeff Chandler, Linda Darnell, Dale Robertson e Cornel Wilde.

Jeff Chandler, que estava no começo de carreira, admirava tanto Joseph Cotten que ele aparecia para ver as cenas do ator veterano, mesmo quando ele não estava escalado para atuar.

Um dos poucos filmes a usar com precisão os termos nortistas e sulistas nas batalhas da Guerra Civil. Na cena de jantar de boas vindas pela chegada dos confederados, Jeff Chandler pergunta a Joseph Cotten se estava na batalha de "First Bull Run", termo dos nortistas para a primeira grande batalha da guerra civil. Cotten responde que sim, ele esteve e complementa que perdeu seu irmão em "First Manassas", o termo usado pelos rebeldes para a mesma batalha.

During the Civil War, in 1863,Confederate prisoners of war agree to join forces with the Union Army in the common fight against Indians.In return,the Confederate POWs are promised their freedom by President Lincoln during his Special Proclamation.A company of Confederate Georgia cavalry POWs,under the command of Confederate Colonel Clay Tucker, joins the Union on the sole condition they wouldn't have to fight against the Confederacy.The company is sent to the isolated and undermanned Fort Thorn, New Mexico, on the Western frontier. The fort is commanded by Union major Henry Kenniston who is limping from an old war wound and who hates Confederates.The old animosities between Unionists and Confederates quickly resurface during their fragile alliance against the Indians.

Jeff Chandler, who was in the very early stages of his career, admired Joseph Cotten so much that he would show up to watch the veteran actor work even when he was not scheduled to be there.

One of the few movies to accurately use both the Southern and Northern terms for Civil War battles. In the welcoming dinner shortly after the former Rebels arrive, Major Hutchinson (Jeff Chandler) asks Colonel/Lieutenant Taylor (Joseph Cotten) if he was at "First Bull Run", the Northern term for the first major battle of the war. Taylor responds that he was, but later states he lost his brother at "First Manassas", the correct Southern term for the same battle.

Looking for Mr. Goodbar (À Procura de Mr. Goodbar), de Richard Brooks (1977)

Diane Keaton faz Thereza, filha de um pai católico muito rígido e teve um trauma por causa de escoliose congênita. Quando era uma adolescente, ela sofreu muito para se curar da escoliose, sendo imobilizada por um ano depois de muitas cirurgias. Quando ela se forma como professora para pessoas surdas, ela decide ficar livre do pai e viver sozinha em um apartamento alugado. Ela encontra um trabalho em uma escola especializada, onde ela é um professora dedicada e amável com suas crianças durante o dia. Mas à noite, ela muda, como Dr. Jeckyl e Mr. Hyde, procurando liberdade sexual com vários relacionamentos.

Diane Keaton foi indicada ao Globo de Ouro de Melhor Atriz. Tuesday Weld, que faz Katherine, foi indicada ao Oscar de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante.

Theresa (Diane Keaton) is the daughter of a very rigid catholic father, and has a serious trauma with a scoliosis she had due to a congenital problem. When she was a teenager, she suffered a lot to heal the scoliosis, being immobilized for one year after many surgeries. When she graduates in teacher for deaf people, she decides to get free from her father and to live alone in a rented apartment. She finds a job in a specialized school, where she is a lovely and affectionate teacher with her kids during the day. However, in the night, like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, she searches for sexual freedom cruising bars, having sex with the most different men, having a promiscuous and very low life.

Cast: Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, Richard Gere, William Atherton, Tom Berenger, LeVar Burton and Brian Dennehy.

Keaton was nominaded for the Golden Globe. And Tuesday Weld for the Oscar.

Mr. Goodbar  is a name of a chocolate made by Hershey´s.

Fourteen Hours (Horas Intermináveis), de Henry Hathaway (1951)

FOURTEEN HOURS begins with Richard Basehart (Robert Cosick) walking onto the ledge outside his hotel room. He's about to jump but can't quite bring himself to do it. A nearby cop (Paul Douglas) looks up and sees him on this ledge on the 15th floor and hurries over to the hotel to try to talk him out of jumping. Soon, his superiors come and relieve him--they'll work on trying to get Basehart down and Douglas simply isn't trained for this sort of thing. However, the so-called experts don't seem to get through to them, so they get Douglas back--after all, he had developed some rapport with the jumper. Soon, a series of family members are brought to help out, though in hindsight his mother (Agnes Moorehead) visiting was probably NOT the best idea.

Great cast with: Paul Douglas, Richard Basehart, Barbara Bel Geddes, Debra Paget, Agnes Moorehead, Howard Da Silva, Grace Kelly and Jeffrey Hunter as Danny, Ossie Davies, John Cassavetes, Leif Erickson, Brian Keith and Janice Rule. 

O filme começa com Richard Basehart (Robert Cosick) em um quarto de hotel, recebendo uma refeição e assustando o garçom ao ficar no parapeito do lado de fora da janela do prédio. Um policial (Charlie Dunningan), papel de Paul Douglas, fazendo sua ronda olha para cima, após um grito de terror de uma vizinha, e vê o suicida no 15º andar e se apressa em correr para telefonar para a delegacia. Logo, seus superiores irão retirá-lo do caso e vão tentar convencer Robert a não pular, mas depois eles se convencem que é melhor deixar a cargo de Charlie. Logo, aparece uma série de membros da família de Robert para tentar ajudar, mas talvez a vinda da sua mãe pode não ser uma boa ideia.

Moll Flanders (Os Amores de Moll Flanders), 1996

The daughter of a thief, young Moll is placed in the care of a nunnery after her mother's execution, but the actions of an abusive priest lead her to rebel as a teenager, and she escapes to the dangerous streets of London. Further misfortunes drive her to accept a job as a prostitute from the conniving Mrs. Allworthy, where she first meets Hibble, who is working as Allworthy's servant and takes a special interest in the young woman's well-being. With his help, she retains hope for the future, ultimately falling in love with an unconventional artist who promises the possibility of romantic happiness.

A filha de uma ladra, a jovem Moll  (Robin Wright),  é colocada aos cuidados de freiras depois que sua mãe foi executada, mas as ações de um padre abusivo levam ela a se rebelar enquanto adolescente e acaba escapando do lugar para as perigosas ruas de Londres. Problemas posteriores a levam a aceitar um trabalho como prostituta da conivente Sra. Allworthy (Stockard Channing), onde ela conhece Hibble (Morgan Freeman), que está trabalhando como criado de Allworthy e que fica com interesse especial pelo bem estar da jovem. Com a ajuda dele, ela tem a esperança para um futuro melhor e depois se apaixonando por um artista que promete a ela a possibilidade de uma felicidade amorosa.

The Defector (Talvez Seja Melhor Assim), 1966

Montgomery Clift plays Professor Bower. He's coerced by the CIA to go into communist East Germany and get important information from a man who wants to defect. The problem is that when Bower arrives, the Germans know what he's up to. And so, they send a top Stasi officer, Peter Heinzmann (Hardy Krüger) to convince Bower to either give up or defect to the East.

A melancholy air permeates The Defector. Perhaps the knowledge that this was Montgomery Clift's last role taints the viewer's experience somewhat but there certainly is very little else memorable about the film. Clift looks gaunt and nervous and even the actors around him seem to sense his imminent demise.

Besides Monty Clift and Hardy Kruger, Roddy McDowall as Agent Adams and Jean-Luc Godard in a small role.

Music by Serge Gainsbourg.

Movie directed by Raoul Levy, who died in the same year as Monty Clift, 1966, with practically the same age, 45 years old.

Monty Clift faz o papel do Professor Bower. Ele é  forçado pela CIA a entrar na Alemanha Oriental (lado comunista) e conseguir importantes informações de um homem que quer desertar. O problema é que quando Bower chega antes na Alemanha Ocidental,, os alemães já sabem para que ele veio. E assim, eles enviam um oficial da Stasi (A Polícia Secreta da Alemanha comunista), Peter Heinzmann, papel de Hardy Kruger para convencer Bower a desistir ou desertar para Alemanha Oriental.

Uma ar melancólico permeia o filme. Talvez por saber que este foi o último filme de Montgomery Clift. Clift parece envelhecido e nervoso a até mesmo os atores que contracenam com ele parecem perceber que ele não iria muito longe. Para quem viu seu personagem no filme "O Julgamento de Nuremberg", vai sentir Clift atuando como se fosse aquele personagem real.

Além de Monty e Hardy Kruger (um dos melhores atores alemães e falecido este ano com 93 anos), temos Roddy McDowall como agente Adams e uma ponta do diretor Jean-Luc Godard.

Trilha sonora de Serge Gainsbourg.

Filme dirigido por Ralph Levy que veio a falecer no mesmo ano que Monty Clift, em 1966, praticamente com a mesma idade, 45 anos.

Wise Blood (Sangue Selvagem), de John Huston (1979)

Preaching the Church Without Christ, Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif) tells anyone that will listen that he wants a church that is free from salvation and dogma, a church "where the blind don't see and the lame don't walk and what's dead stays that way". With existentialist overtones, he says, `Where you came from is gone, where you thought you were going to never was there, and where you are is no good unless you can get away from it." In John Huston's darkly satiric film Wise Blood, adapted from Flannery O' Connor's first novel, Haze is caught in a struggle between the obsessions of his past and his desire to live the truth.

Raised in a predominately Protestant area, Flannery O' Connor was a devout Catholic whose novels and short stories paint a tragi-comic portrait of Bible evangelism and the hypocrisy that thrives in decaying Southern towns.

Na igreja de Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif), a Igreja sem Cristo, ele diz a todos, que queiram ouvir, que ele quer uma igreja que seja livre da pregação da salvação e dos dogmas religiosos, uma igreja "onde o cego não vê e o manco não caminha e o surdo permanece do que jeito que é'. Com conotações existencialistas, ele diz, "De onde você veio, não existe mais, para onde você pensava que estaria indo, nunca esteve lá e onde você está  não é nada bom, a menos que fuja desse lugar". Mais um filme de John Huston, um pouco desconhecido, adaptado do primeiro romance do escritor Flannery O'Connor. O escritor cresceu em uma área predominantemente protestante, mas ele era um devoto católico, cujos romances e contos descrevem um retrato tragicômico do evangelismo bíblico e a hipocrisia que floresce nas decadentes cidades sulistas dos EUA.

Com Brad Dourif como Hazel Motes, Harry Dean Stanton e Ned Beatty. Rápida participação de John Huston como o avô de Hazel.

Café Express, by Nanni Loy (1980)

The film was inspired by a candid camera show set on trains, Viaggio in Seconda Classe, also by director Nanni Loy.

Who´s Who, by Mike Leigh (1979)

Slice-of-life look at class divisions among employees of a brokerage house. Alan, with his portrait of the Queen and love of the peerage; his wife April, who raises cats; youthful and pretentious friends Nigel, Giles, and Anthony, who gather for a wine-soaked dinner party with the chatty and risque Samantha and the mousy Caroline; the plummy Lord and Lady Crouchurst, in a spot of bother needing the help of Francis, a senior partner, to assist with the family’s cash flow. Alan comes home from work to find Mr. Shakespeare doing a photo shoot of one of April’s cats and a wealthy stranger, Miss Hunt, waiting to purchase one. His instincts for sycophantic palaver kick in.
