Its central character, born of a capitalist inn keeper, is victimized by the new Communist party director who is jealous of her beauty and success. From this tough beginning we watch her fall from grace in the village, lose everything that is dear, and face further humiliation with the arrival of the cultural revolution. Yet from this dark low we watch her find salvation in those around her and find something worth living for.

Hibiscus Town é uma estória sobre vitimização, humilhação e salvação em um pequeno vilarejo chinês antes, durante e depois da Revolução Cultural.
A personagem central, nascida de um dono de hospedaria capitalista, é vitimizada pelo novo diretor do partido comunista, que tem ciúmes de sua beleza e sucesso. De seu duro começo, nós veremos sua queda de simpatia no vilarejo, perder tudo que lhe é caro e enfrentar posterior humilhação com a chegada da Revolução Cultural. Contudo, mesmo dessa posição ruim, veremos ele encontrar a salvação naqueles ao redor e encontrar algo por que vale a pena viver.
