The Twelve Chairs (Banzé na Rússia), 1970

In 1920s Soviet Russia, a fallen aristocrat, a priest and a con artist search for a treasure of jewels hidden inside one of twelve dining chairs, lost during the revolution.

Ron Moody (Fagin in the musical OLIVER) is a minor Tsarist nobleman who discovers, when attending his mother-in-law on her death bed, that she hid her fortune in jewelry in one of the dining room chairs. There were a set of twelve chairs, and they were appropriated by the government to be given to deserving members of the proletariat. Moody discovers that his mother-in-law did confess this to one person besides him: the local Russian Orthodox Priest (Dom DeLuise). Moody finds the latter a difficult opponent to beat to the fortune first. By chance he falls in with a young swindler (Frank Langella) and he and Langella pursue the chairs, and also send DeLuise on a wild goose chase following a second set of similar chairs.

Filme de Mel Brooks, conhecido no Brasil como “Banzé na Rússia”.

Nos anos 20, na União Soviética, um aristocrata czarista, em decadência com a chegada do comunismo, descobre que sua sogra, no leito de morte, escondeu a fortuna dela em joias em uma das cadeiras da sala de jantar. Havia 12 cadeiras e elas foram apropriadas pelo governo a serem dadas a membros do proletariado. Ron Moody (conhecido por seu papel de Fagin no musical Oliver) faz esse aristocrata. Ele descobre que sua sogra confessou isso para o padre ortodoxo local (Dom DeLuise). Moody acha que será difícil ganhar do padre. Por acaso, ele se alia a um jovem golpista  (Frank Langella) e os dois vão atrás das cadeiras e mandam DeLuise ir atrás de um  conjunto falso de cadeiras iguais.

Frank Langella foi indicação de Anne Bancroft (esposa de Mel Brooks) por ele ter feito uma peça com ele.

Peter Sellers iria fazer o papel no filme, mas desistiu antes das filmagens. Gene Wilder também desistiu de um dos papeis, pois ele queria fazer outro personagem.
