Fourteen Hours (Horas Intermináveis), de Henry Hathaway (1951)

FOURTEEN HOURS begins with Richard Basehart (Robert Cosick) walking onto the ledge outside his hotel room. He's about to jump but can't quite bring himself to do it. A nearby cop (Paul Douglas) looks up and sees him on this ledge on the 15th floor and hurries over to the hotel to try to talk him out of jumping. Soon, his superiors come and relieve him--they'll work on trying to get Basehart down and Douglas simply isn't trained for this sort of thing. However, the so-called experts don't seem to get through to them, so they get Douglas back--after all, he had developed some rapport with the jumper. Soon, a series of family members are brought to help out, though in hindsight his mother (Agnes Moorehead) visiting was probably NOT the best idea.

Great cast with: Paul Douglas, Richard Basehart, Barbara Bel Geddes, Debra Paget, Agnes Moorehead, Howard Da Silva, Grace Kelly and Jeffrey Hunter as Danny, Ossie Davies, John Cassavetes, Leif Erickson, Brian Keith and Janice Rule. 

O filme começa com Richard Basehart (Robert Cosick) em um quarto de hotel, recebendo uma refeição e assustando o garçom ao ficar no parapeito do lado de fora da janela do prédio. Um policial (Charlie Dunningan), papel de Paul Douglas, fazendo sua ronda olha para cima, após um grito de terror de uma vizinha, e vê o suicida no 15º andar e se apressa em correr para telefonar para a delegacia. Logo, seus superiores irão retirá-lo do caso e vão tentar convencer Robert a não pular, mas depois eles se convencem que é melhor deixar a cargo de Charlie. Logo, aparece uma série de membros da família de Robert para tentar ajudar, mas talvez a vinda da sua mãe pode não ser uma boa ideia.

Moll Flanders (Os Amores de Moll Flanders), 1996

The daughter of a thief, young Moll is placed in the care of a nunnery after her mother's execution, but the actions of an abusive priest lead her to rebel as a teenager, and she escapes to the dangerous streets of London. Further misfortunes drive her to accept a job as a prostitute from the conniving Mrs. Allworthy, where she first meets Hibble, who is working as Allworthy's servant and takes a special interest in the young woman's well-being. With his help, she retains hope for the future, ultimately falling in love with an unconventional artist who promises the possibility of romantic happiness.

A filha de uma ladra, a jovem Moll  (Robin Wright),  é colocada aos cuidados de freiras depois que sua mãe foi executada, mas as ações de um padre abusivo levam ela a se rebelar enquanto adolescente e acaba escapando do lugar para as perigosas ruas de Londres. Problemas posteriores a levam a aceitar um trabalho como prostituta da conivente Sra. Allworthy (Stockard Channing), onde ela conhece Hibble (Morgan Freeman), que está trabalhando como criado de Allworthy e que fica com interesse especial pelo bem estar da jovem. Com a ajuda dele, ela tem a esperança para um futuro melhor e depois se apaixonando por um artista que promete a ela a possibilidade de uma felicidade amorosa.

The Defector (Talvez Seja Melhor Assim), 1966

Montgomery Clift plays Professor Bower. He's coerced by the CIA to go into communist East Germany and get important information from a man who wants to defect. The problem is that when Bower arrives, the Germans know what he's up to. And so, they send a top Stasi officer, Peter Heinzmann (Hardy Krüger) to convince Bower to either give up or defect to the East.

A melancholy air permeates The Defector. Perhaps the knowledge that this was Montgomery Clift's last role taints the viewer's experience somewhat but there certainly is very little else memorable about the film. Clift looks gaunt and nervous and even the actors around him seem to sense his imminent demise.

Besides Monty Clift and Hardy Kruger, Roddy McDowall as Agent Adams and Jean-Luc Godard in a small role.

Music by Serge Gainsbourg.

Movie directed by Raoul Levy, who died in the same year as Monty Clift, 1966, with practically the same age, 45 years old.

Monty Clift faz o papel do Professor Bower. Ele é  forçado pela CIA a entrar na Alemanha Oriental (lado comunista) e conseguir importantes informações de um homem que quer desertar. O problema é que quando Bower chega antes na Alemanha Ocidental,, os alemães já sabem para que ele veio. E assim, eles enviam um oficial da Stasi (A Polícia Secreta da Alemanha comunista), Peter Heinzmann, papel de Hardy Kruger para convencer Bower a desistir ou desertar para Alemanha Oriental.

Uma ar melancólico permeia o filme. Talvez por saber que este foi o último filme de Montgomery Clift. Clift parece envelhecido e nervoso a até mesmo os atores que contracenam com ele parecem perceber que ele não iria muito longe. Para quem viu seu personagem no filme "O Julgamento de Nuremberg", vai sentir Clift atuando como se fosse aquele personagem real.

Além de Monty e Hardy Kruger (um dos melhores atores alemães e falecido este ano com 93 anos), temos Roddy McDowall como agente Adams e uma ponta do diretor Jean-Luc Godard.

Filme dirigido por Ralph Levy que veio a falecer no mesmo ano que Monty Clift, em 1966, praticamente com a mesma idade, 45 anos.

Wise Blood (Sangue Selvagem), de John Huston (1979)

Preaching the Church Without Christ, Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif) tells anyone that will listen that he wants a church that is free from salvation and dogma, a church "where the blind don't see and the lame don't walk and what's dead stays that way". With existentialist overtones, he says, `Where you came from is gone, where you thought you were going to never was there, and where you are is no good unless you can get away from it." In John Huston's darkly satiric film Wise Blood, adapted from Flannery O' Connor's first novel, Haze is caught in a struggle between the obsessions of his past and his desire to live the truth.

Raised in a predominately Protestant area, Flannery O' Connor was a devout Catholic whose novels and short stories paint a tragi-comic portrait of Bible evangelism and the hypocrisy that thrives in decaying Southern towns.

Na igreja de Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif), a Igreja sem Cristo, ele diz a todos, que queiram ouvir, que ele quer uma igreja que seja livre da pregação da salvação e dos dogmas religiosos, uma igreja "onde o cego não vê e o manco não caminha e o surdo permanece do que jeito que é'. Com conotações existencialistas, ele diz, "De onde você veio, não existe mais, para onde você pensava que estaria indo, nunca esteve lá e onde você está  não é nada bom, a menos que fuja desse lugar". Mais um filme de John Huston, um pouco desconhecido, adaptado do primeiro romance do escritor Flannery O'Connor. O escritor cresceu em uma área predominantemente protestante, mas ele era um devoto católico, cujos romances e contos descrevem um retrato tragicômico do evangelismo bíblico e a hipocrisia que floresce nas decadentes cidades sulistas dos EUA.

Com Brad Dourif como Hazel Motes, Harry Dean Stanton e Ned Beatty. Rápida participação de John Huston como o avô de Hazel.

Café Express, by Nanni Loy (1980)

Nino Manfredi stars in this top-notch Italian comedy about a charming flim-flam man's attempts to aid his ailing son, outwitting the dim-witted police in the process. A lovable, compassionate portrait by Italy's most inventive comedy director, Nanni Loy.

The film was inspired by a candid camera show set on trains, Viaggio in Seconda Classe, also by director Nanni Loy.

Who´s Who, by Mike Leigh (1979)

Slice-of-life look at class divisions among employees of a brokerage house. Alan, with his portrait of the Queen and love of the peerage; his wife April, who raises cats; youthful and pretentious friends Nigel, Giles, and Anthony, who gather for a wine-soaked dinner party with the chatty and risque Samantha and the mousy Caroline; the plummy Lord and Lady Crouchurst, in a spot of bother needing the help of Francis, a senior partner, to assist with the family’s cash flow. Alan comes home from work to find Mr. Shakespeare doing a photo shoot of one of April’s cats and a wealthy stranger, Miss Hunt, waiting to purchase one. His instincts for sycophantic palaver kick in.

The Betsy (Os Desalmados), 1978

The patriarch of a family-owned corporation hires a young race car driver to help him design a fuel efficient car in secrecy. They face resistance from the president of the company (the patriarch's grandson), who wishes to eliminate the motor car division because of bad blood between himself and his grandfather. During flashbacks, a parallel set of problems is revealed in the family's past, problems that persist into the present, and the race car driver gets deeper into the web of deception and corporate intrigue.

Directed by Daniel Petrie. Great cast, including Laurence Olivier, Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Duvall, Katherine Ross, Lesley Anne-Down, Jane Alexander, Inga Swenson, Edward Herrmann and Joseph Wiseman..

Not very good rated by IMDb, but watch it for the cast. Based on novel by Harold Robbins.

Timescape (Fugindo do Futuro), 1992

Before they can complete renovations on their new inn, Widower (Ben Wilson) and daughter (Hillary) are visited by a woman seeking immediate lodging for her strange group of travellers. Why they won't stay at the hotel in town is just the first of many mysteries surrounding the group that lead Wilson to a startling discovery affecting his family and neighbours.

Based on the novella Vintage Season by Henry Kuttner and C.L. Moore, which originally appeared in the September 1946 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. It was credited to Lawrence O'Donnell, a pseudonym used a few times by Kuttner and Moore.

Antes que possam completar reformas na sua hospedaria, o viúvo Ben Wilson (Jeff Daniels) e sua filha Hillary (Ariana Richards) recebem a visita de uma mulher que procura hospedagem imediata para seu grupo de estranhos viajantes. O porquê deles não pararem em um hotel da cidade é o primeiro de muitos mistérios que cercam  esse grupo, que faz Wilson ter um descoberta espantosa, que irá afetar sua família e seus vizinhos.

Baseado em novella (maior que um conto e menor que um romance completo) de Henry Kuttner e C.L. Moore, que originalmente apareceu em 1946 em uma revista de ficção científica. Fora creditada a Lawrence O'Donnell, um pseudônimo usado algumas vezes por Kuttner e Moore.

Partner (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1968)

Meados da década de 60 foi um período em particular de muitos acontecimentos históricos, culturais, artísticos e políticos. Havia a Guerra no Vietnã, a Guerra Fria, protestos em muitos países, um contra De Gaulle, golpes militares na América Latina, o black power, o women´s lib, a liberação sexual e o uso de drogas como uma forma de escape dos jovens.

Esse pano de fundo certamente influenciou Bernardo Bertolucci a fazer esse filme.

O filme é baseado em “O Duplo” de Dostoievsky e que Bernardo Bertolucci (creio que este seja seu terceiro filme) coloca em contexto atual na Itália. 

Jacob é um jovem estudante de Arte, tentando criar uma peça que quebre conceitos e apresente novas visões artísticas, mas ele está atrapalhado consigo mesmo e com a vida ao seu redor. Tudo parece sufocá-lo ou bloqueá-lo.

De repente, uma segunda versão dele próprio – o duplo Jacob, ou seu doppelganger, aparece para ele e tenta fazê-lo sair da sua concha, ser audacioso, criar material revolucionário com seus companheiros e desafiar o status-quo político do seu tempo. O encorajamento que o original Jacob precisava é um ponto decisivo, onde ele se liberta do comum, da rotina. Ele coloca pontos firmes em sua relação com uma garota e ele se torna mais engajado com sua arte e apresenta aos seus colegas que ideia eles devem colocar em prática, se fazer uma peça ou um filme, que possa mudar o sistema, filmando à maneira de Godard.

The film has its basis on Dostoyesvsky's "The Double" and what Bertolucci does is put into his own current context in Italy. Jacob is a young art student trying to develop a play that breaks concepts, presents new artistic views but he's too stranded within himself or the life around him. everything seems to suffocate him or block him. Suddenly, a second version of himself - the double Jacob - appears to him trying to make him come out of his shell, be bold, create his revolutionary work with his mates, and challenge the political status quo of his era. The encouragement the original Jacob needed is a turning point where he frees himself from the ordinary, the routine; dares to put firm terms into his relationship with a girl; and allows him to be more engaged with his art and adequally present to his colleagues what's the real idea they must put into practice either if doing a play or a movie that can change the game, challenge the system whether making a film about everything, shoot it as you like it or to be like Godard (that's the part that kills me a little, since Bernardo is "revealing" the idol behind the idea. If you look at "Partner." you'll find that it rings more like Godard than Bertolucci); or you can cause commotions, blackouts, stop a whole city in order to crash the system and allow people to see that there's still love and freedom outside of leaders telling us what to do.

Neighbors (Estranhos Vizinhos), de John Avildsen (1981)

Este foi o último filme da dupla Belushi e Aykroyd – Um deles o clássico “The Blues Brothers”. E o último de Belushi, que veio a morrer de overdose de drogas alguns meses depois que o filme estreou.

Belushi vive Earl Keese. Está com sobrepeso e se aproximando ma meia idade. Vive uma vida confortável e rotineira com sua família e sua casa nos subúrbios (que podemos considerar como uma tradução de bairros afastados do centro da cidade). Até que a casa vizinha é comprada por Vic (Dan Aykroyd) e Ramona (Cathy Moriarty), que logo enlouquecem Earl. A vida dele vira de cabeça para baixo.

Filme dirigido por John Avildsen e está disponível para assistir no meu canal no YouTube (através do link abaixo). Ele está bloqueado para a audiência dos Estados Unidos no YouTube, mas liberado para os demais países.

John Belushi estava originalmente escalado para o papel de Vic e Aykroyd no papel de Earl, que parecia mais natural. Mas os dois resolveram trocar de papel (como Randolph Scott e Joel McCrea em “Ride de High Country”) antes do filme ser rodado.

This the last of the three films with Belushi and Aykoyd. And the last movie of Belushi.

Earl Keese (Belushi) is a slightly overweight, fairly average guy who is approaching middle age. He leads a reasonably comfortable life with his family in their suburban home ... until the house next door is bought by Vic (Aykroyd) and Ramona (Cathy Moriarty), who quickly drive Earl crazy! Vic's lunatic behavior has Earl running in circles while Ramona's coarse seductiveness leaves him panting.In short, Earl's tranquil life is suddenly turned upside down.

John Belushi was originally cast in the role of Vic and Dan Aykroyd in the role of Earl. The two decided to switch roles just prior to filming the movie. As such, Belushi and Aykroyd starred in this movie acting against type, loud-mouthed Belushi played a quiet character whilst the meeker Aykroyd played an over-the-top character.

Circle of Deceit, by Volker Schlöndorff (1981)

A German reporter Georg Laschen (Bruno Ganz) arrives in Beirut, Lebanon with a photographer Hoffmann (Jerzy Skolimowski), aiming to write an article on the inflammatory situation there. The city has more or less been turned into a huge war zone where bombs and gunfire are ever-present especially during the dark hours of the day. Laschen's own personal motives for accepting such a dangerous job are related to his frustration about his troubled marital situation back in Germany; something he tries to overcome by striking up a relationship with Ariane (Hanna Schygulla), a white woman living in Beirut. Despite witnessing many atrocities, or perhaps because of it, Laschen struggles to achieve an understanding of the motives of the warring parties who both claim to fight for peace and freedom and accuse each other of barbaric acts of terror.

The film was shot on location in Beirut which guarantees a very authentic look to the damaged city.
